Natalie Munchgesang Obituary News: 26-year-old Provo woman killed in fiery I-15 crash involving Utah trooper.
The victim of the weekend wrong-way collision involving a Utah Highway Patrol trooper has been identified as a 26-year-old Provo woman.
Natalie Munchgesang died as a result of the head-on collision involving trooper Carlos Rios-Redd.
Emergency responders were notified of a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-15 in Utah County just before two in the morning on Sunday.
The Utah Highway Patrol released a statement stating that “as trooper Rios-Redd was traveling southbound on I-15, before any additional information could be gathered or broadcast to him, the trooper’s vehicle and the wrong-way vehicle collided head-on.”
Not far behind, and the first person on the scene following the collision, was Trooper Ben Fagan. He noticed the police car of one of his fellow troopers was on fire.
“In an effort to free trooper Rios-Redd from the patrol cruiser, trooper Fagan broke out the driver’s window. Trooper Fagan went to get an extinguisher because the fire was becoming bigger and needed to be put out. After some time, the troopers managed to open the car door, and trooper Fagan took trooper Rios-Redd out and relocated him somewhere safer, the department stated.
At the scene, Munchgesang was declared deceased. The vehicle’s passenger, a woman, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Rios-Redd’s condition during transfer was critical. On Sunday, Governor Spencer Cox tweeted that Rios-Redd suffered a broken femur.
