All hail the Rabbit vibrator.

The device has been our steady go-to for years, has a permanent spot in our underwear drawer, and has easily been our healthiest and longest relationship. After a particularly stressful day, it's the one thing that we can count on to totally zen us out in a matter of minutes. Even if you have yet to experience its magic—and if that's the case, get thee to an adult store and make a purchase immediately—you're likely familiar with the phenomenon surrounding the Rabbit.

Similar to the Cosmopolitan cocktail, the Rabbit skyrocketed to fame after a cameo on Sex and the City placed the vibrator in a more public light, and the device flew off the shelves in the episode's wake. Unbeknownst to some but common knowledge to those who swear by it, the vibrator had actually been around for over a decade at that point. Vibratex, a sex toy company based in Japan, began creating animal-shaped vibrators in 1983 as a workaround to a rule stating their manufacturers weren't legally allowed to make sex toys. Vibratex created other models based on members of the animal kingdom—the Kangaroo, Beaver, and Turtle, to name a few—but the Rabbit, which launched in 1984, was the one that stuck around. In addition to the vibrating pulsations, the Rabbit Pearl was also equipped with rotating spheres mid-shaft for added sensation, and the attached remote allowed you to dial up the intensity as you saw fit.

It gained international success upon launch, but it wasn't until 1993 that it arrived stateside—Babeland, everyone's favorite sex toy-focused retailer, opened its first location in Seattle, and began selling the Rabbit Pearl. Upon expanding to a New York City location in 1997, Babeland began selling the Rabbit Habit, which had all the fun of the previous model, minus the attached remote for a totally wireless experience. The Rabbit Habit reached icon status in 1998, following a particularly Rabbit-centric episode of Sex and the City, where Miranda Hobbes, warrior, queen, and overall boss lady, introduced Carrie and friends to the device.

If you remember, Charlotte was the most taken by it.

Many other sex toy brands borrowed the template, launching their own Rabbit-inspired devices in the pre-Y2K era, and even into the aughts, the toy had serious staying power. It even got the Oprah seal of approval—it was dubbed "the Rolls Royce of Sex Toys" in a 2006 issue of O Magazine. To this day, the Rabbit Habit is the top-selling vibrator produced by Vibratex.
